Under the existing agreement between the University of the Azores and the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, the first three years of the course leading to a master's degree in Medicine by the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra are taught at the University of the Azores. Students who successfully complete the first three years of the course (Basic Cycle of Medicine) continue their studies at the Faculty of Medicine, University of Coimbra, entering the 4th of the Integrated Master in Medicine. The aim of undergraduate medical education is to help medical students to acquire a solid and coherent knowledge base associated with the appropriate set of values, attitudes and skills that will enable them to become medical doctors committed to the scientific basis of the art of medicine, the ethical principles and humanitarian approaches that are the foundation of medical practice and to the lifelong improvement of their capabilities to promote the health and well-being of the communities they serve.

Objectives

Demonstrate: knowledge and skills of basic and clinical sciences in the management of common clinical problems; a comprehensive biopsychosocial approach to assessment and treatment of patients; fundamental knowledge of disease prevention / health promotion; communicate effectively with patients, families, and health professionals; ethical principles in medical practice; professional behavior to personal and interpersonal level, awareness of their own health as well as the potential impact of their behavior on others; effective use of information technologies; self-learning skills; ability to explore research opportunities; skills to teach, honesty and concern for the welfare of patients; commitment to lifelong learning; commitment to continuous improvement of their skills, understanding of problems associated with conflicts of interest; commitment to promoting health and well-being of communities; availability to lead.

Professional Opportunities

After completing the Integrated Master's Degree in Medicine at the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Coimbra, and with the enrollment in the Order of Doctors, professionals are able to practice Medicine in institutions such as: hospitals, health care centers, clinics and other health care providers; Teaching; Research.
