IN 2021-2022, NO APPLICATIONS WILL BE OPENED FOR THE CIVIL ENGINEERING PREPARATORY COURSE. Under the existing agreement between the University of the Azores and the Instituto Superior Técnico (IST) of the University of Lisbon, the first two years of the Engineering Sciences course - Mechanical Eng. and Electrical and Computer Engineering. Students who successfully complete the first two years of the course continue their studies at IST, entering the 3rd year of the course. Civil Engineering is responsible for the execution of major works such as dams, viaducts and bridges, roads and canals, collective buildings and equipment, ports and airports, sanitation networks and transport systems, in addition to being involved in the rehabilitation and maintenance of existing infrastructure and constructions. It is also responsible for city planning and land use planning, the design, planning and maintenance of roads, water supply and sanitation networks, the treatment and recycling of waste, the management of water resources and so many other necessary activities to life in society. Mechanical Engineering enables students to develop skills that allow them to perform functions of analysis, design and manufacture of components, tools, machines and equipment, as well as functions of organization and production management. It also provides their integration in multidisciplinary teams that will enable them to deal with complex mechanical engineering problems, collecting, selecting and interpreting the relevant information, including cases of limited or incomplete information, and integrating knowledge acquired in the course, in order to obtain solutions for new challenges. Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering, with its multidisciplinarity, allows students to be stimulated to develop their practical skills, develop and manage projects from the device level, for networks to communication systems and integrated systems. All of this to allow advances in the development of increasingly reliable and robust software and hardware systems, which provide better experiences for all the people who use them.
Mechanical Engineering: a) To train mechanical engineers with skills to conceive, design, manufacture and operate mechanical engineering systems and products; b) Foster a creative, critical, autonomous and interdisciplinary approach, incorporating the most recent technological innovations. Electrotechnical and Computer Engineering - To enable for conception, including analysis, specification, design, industrialization, commercialization and use of products and services that use electricity, along with other forms of energy, in the field of Electrotechnical Engineering and Information Technologies.
Those interested can apply for the course through one of the following national competitions organized by DGES: National Competition for Access and Admission to Public Higher Education; and Special Regimes. Application may also be possible through the following special competitions, organized by the University of the Azores: Special Competitions for Access and Admission to the University of the Azores (Over 23 Years, Holders of Technological Specialization Diploma, Holders of Higher Professional Technician Diploma, Holders of Other Higher Education Courses, Holders of dual certification courses in secondary education and specialized artistic courses); Regimes of Re-entry and Change of Institution / Course; Special competition for access and admission of international students to the University of the Azores. In all cases, the application is dependent on the candidates' compliance with the conditions required for this purpose. For more information on national competitions and the conditions of access and admission, consult the DGES page at www.dges.gov.pt, and for information on special competitions, consult the regulations available on our website.
The Degree in Engineering Sciences aims to train an engineer with a generalist professional profile, but who has the skills to face and solve a variety of technical problems, meeting the growing demands of the job market. Graduates in mechanical engineering can carry out activities in areas from Production to Services, namely in sectors such as Maintenance, Automation, Metalworking, Manufacturing Industry, Production Control, Consultancy, Industrial Engineering Projects, among others. Graduates in electrical and computer engineering have employment and research opportunities in industries ranging from energy production, telecommunications, aerospace to healthcare or banking. Although the 1st cycle of studies includes, from the 2021-2022 academic year, a considerable set of curricular units specific to training in engineering in general, whether Mechanics or Electrotechnics and Computers, the course is particularly oriented towards the continuation of second cycle studies, of a technological nature, leading to the Master's degree, thus allowing high levels of choice and mobility in their area of expertise and in similar areas. In this context, the training that enables the full exercise of the engineering profession according to the qualification levels required by the Order of Engineers is conferred by the second cycle of studies, in particular, the Masters in Mechanical Engineering and in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
