Objectives

Develop specific skills in the context of breastfeeding counseling:
1. Justify the importance of breastfeeding
2. Use the physiology of lactation
3. Know how to observe and evaluate a feed
4. Teach breastfeeding positioning techniques
5. Teach techniques for the extraction and conservation of breast milk
6. Practice breastfeeding counseling.

Policy and promotion of breastfeeding in Portugal
Breastfeeding across times and cultures
Promoting breastfeeding:
• Anatomy and physiology of breastfeeding
• Breast exam
• Lactation: production and release of milk
• Breastfeeding assessment algorithm
• Maternal nutrition and diet: importance of complementary feeding
• Breastfeeding and Medication
Strategies for developing the mother's ability to breastfeed:
• Refusal situations (Finger feeding; relactation)
• Insufficient milk and baby crying
• Milk extraction
• How to increase breast milk production
• Methods of preserving breast milk
• Administration and milk per glass
• Low birth weight and sick newborns
Parenting Aspects:
• Preparation, transition and exercise of parenting
• Father and family contributions
• Woman and work
Code and marketing of breast milk substitutes

Teaching Methodologies

During the development of the CU, an attempt is made to promote active and participatory learning, privileging interaction and the integration of knowledge. In theoretical teaching sessions, the expository method is used to present the contents and start the discussion or, at the end of the debate, carry out its synthesis. In the theoretical-practical hours, theoretical knowledge is articulated with the practice of the various exercises, promoting to the student the know-how inherent to the specialized exercise in this area.
For the hours of autonomous work, materials will be made available to help deepen or consolidate knowledge.
