Objectives

To consolidate the knowledge of the historical and geographical framework of Portuguese Atlanticism.
The Course proposes a study of the relevance of Transatlantic relations, particularly in a post- Cold War context.
To provide a historical perspective of Portuguese American relations throughout history (1776-2024) and to the role that the islands of Azores have played in this context.
It addresses Portuguese integration in the international organizations created after 1945 – UN, EFTA, OECD, NATO.
Additionally, it also focuses on Portuguese integration within European Union.

Program

1.. Historical framework and the permanent guidelines of Portuguese foreign policy.
2. Historical relations between Portugal and the United States until 1945.
3. Transatlantic cooperation throughout the twentieth century.
4. Portugal and the International System after 1945.
5. Portugal and European Integration.
6. The relations between Portugal and the United States after II World War (1945-2024);
6.1. American Lajes Base and its relevance in the American geostrategic thinking and bilateral relations between the two countries;
6.2. Portuguese military cooperation with France and West Germany during Cold War: military bases in Flores and Beja;
6.3. The United States and the Portuguese revolutionary process.
7. The Portuguese archipelagos as American Atlantic border.
8. The bases and airports of Azores as a projection of American power.
9. China relevance in the international system and its effect on Transatlantic relations.
