Theory of International Relations. From the Polis to the Atlantic Community

Objectives

1) To explore the nature and the value of theory for the understanding of reality; 2) to revisit the major theories of International Relations; 3) to offer students a synoptic perspective of the present international system and of the profound crisis it undergoes; 4) To center attention upon the Euro-Atlantic Space and upon the forms of the political it adopted, understanding integration, at the infra and supra-state, continental, European and civilizational, Atlantic, levels as instrumental in the development of alternatives, more capable of allowing for the overcoming of the present crisis. Theory is explored in search of models of order alternative to those proposed by modernity and of clues for the future. Aware the theories and the concrete practice of international relations across the Euro-Atlantic world, it is expected that students will develop an in depth research on a specific theme that may of interest to them and allow them to begin to consider possible thesis projects.

I. General introduction. Theory, knowledge and action;
II. International Relations and political organization. The state and the International System;
IV. The State, realism and power. Realism, realpolitik e neo¬ realism. Realism, utopia and systems theory;
V. Liberalism, utopia and institucionalism. Liberalism, markets and justice;
VI. Right, prohibition and duty to war. The paradigm of Moral man and Immoral Society;
VII. Theories of International Relations: crisis of the State and relevance for the future;
VIII. Sovereignty and Autonomy. The autonomous region as a political entity and Europe as an OPNI;
IX. The United States and Europe. Cold War and integration;
X. The Transatlantic Relation: partnership, competition and community construction. Interests and values: The idea of Atlantic Community, in the mid Twentieth century and today;
XI. Conclusion. The Azores, the Outermost Regions, Europe and the Atlantic Community.

Teaching Methodologies

A componente teórica respeita à exposição dos conteúdos programáticos, interligando-os com a bibliografia recomendada. Por sua vez, a componente teórico-prática privilegia o debate entre o docente e os alunos, assim como pontuais interações de grupo, que passam sobretudo por demonstrar a compreensão dos conteúdos programáticos por parte dos alunos.
