Objectives

The main aim is that students gain an understanding of the complexity of the interpreting process and develop
basic interpreting skills. By the end of the semester the students should be able:
- to understand and discuss the basic principles of interpreting;
- to identify the gist of a spoken text and distinguish between core and
peripheral content;
- to carry out short interpreting tasks between English and Portuguese in consecutive and simultaneous modes;

- to use the interpreting techniques and strategies taught;
- to produce clear, well-paced speech, with appropriate stress and intonation;
- to use appropriate register and style;
- to mediate communication effectively, showing awareness of the cultures involved;
- to take notes and reconstitute a short message in the TL;
- to research background information and terminology;
- to apply strategies to cope with difficult or stressful interpreting situations;
- to demonstrate respect for interpreting codes of conduct

Program

Students are introduced to the principal modes of Interpreting (consecutive and simultaneous, whispered, relay and liaison) and the situations in which they commonly occur (conference, judicial, escort, public sector). A comparison is made between the skills required by the translator and the interpreter and the implications for the interpreter are discussed, Practice is provided to develop the many skills to be mastered by the interpreter, including speech delivery, with careful control of pace, stress and intonation, exercises to stimulate memory, message relaying between 2 languages, guessing the meaning of unfamiliar lexical items, synthesising information and discourse prediction. Simulated situations are used to practice the different types of interpreting, with a focus on liaison interpreting, consecutive conference interpreting and simultaneous conference interpreting. Interpreter codes of practice are presented and discussed.

Teaching Methodologies

A range of methods is used. Even though classes have a strong practical focus, the fundamentals of interpreting theory are presented through short expositions and selected reading texts, which provide a basis for discussion. Intensive listening practice and spoken interaction are encouraged. Students experience a range of learning activities, including problem-solving, collaborative learning and peer interaction.

Students are expected to take active responsibility for learning and research, both inside and outside of class, working in pairs or teams, as well as individually, and peer and self criticism are encouraged. Students are assessed continuously, taking into account the following: attendance and participation, preparation of assignments and performance in practice sessions, totalling 20% of the final grade; a written assignment (20%) and three tests in practical interpreting (in liaison, consecutive and simultaneous modes), totalling 60% of the final grade.
