Objectives

The learning outcomes of this curricular unit are similar to the ones of Translation Practice – French-Portuguese (although students will translate from Portuguese into French), which this curricular unit should further develop :

- To choose different translation strategies, according to the nature of the text to be translated;

- To identify the implicit meaning of texts and their determining formal aspects;

- To search for specialized vocabulary and to create glossaries;

- To master work methodologies;

- To effectively use the translation tools and resources;

- To develop the ability to critically assess one’s own work and that of others;

- To make the bridge between translation theory and practice, by applying the theoretical principles and concepts when translating.

II. Specialized translation
1. Translating texts about the History of Portugal
2. Translation texts for touristic purposes
3. Special traits of juridical translation
4. Translating scientific articles
III. Literary Translation
1. Stylistic issues and the preservation of meaning
2. Translation strategies for cultural references

Teaching Methodologies

- Intensive translation practice (both in group and individually);
- Discussion of the translations made by the students;
- Comparing and assessing translations made by other translators;
- Specialized vocabulary search exercises;
- Exploring online translation resources;
- Constructing glossaries about specific subjects.
Evaluation:
Evaluation will consist on 4 individual translations, made during the seminars, at the end of each item of the
syllabus:
1. Translation of a juridical text (translation and the creation of a glossary) – 15%
2. Translation of a touristic brochure about the Azores (translation and comment on the translation options) – 35%
3. Translation of a text about the history of Portugal (Translation and glossary) – 15%
4. Translation of a literary text (translation and comparison with the published version) – 35%
