Carrying out this clinical teaching allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the dynamics and functioning of Continuing Care, as well as its different aspects, such as rehabilitation, readaptation, social reintegration and palliative care. It also allows the opportunity to identify people with criteria for inclusion in continued and palliative care and the needs of the same, informal caregivers and families. The fact that this clinical teaching takes place in services where they are faced with people with transient or permanent loss of mobility allows students to mobilize the knowledge acquired in the theoretical curricular unit “Nursing in Continuing and Palliative Care” taught in the 3rd year. The analysis and reflection on real situations, the realization of the nursing process, in which the family caregiver is included, allow a better understanding of the true dimension and objectives of continued and palliative care.
In clinical teaching, it is essential to involve students in the real situations that are provided to them, allowing them to demonstrate skills related to the knowledge acquired in the theoretical periods. Students will be integrated into a team and guided by a pedagogical supervisor and a clinical supervisor. They will provide care to people with inclusion criteria in continued care, according to Decree-Law 101/2006, and to people in need of palliative care.
