Objectives

Introduction to Parasitology. Study of the life cycles of important arthropod and protozoan parasites of domestic, sylvatic, exotic and aquatic animals and also of human beings. Development of laboratorial skills in the field of Parasitology.

Program

Theoretical pr ogramme: history and basic concepts of Parasitology. Importance of the discipline for Veterinary Medicine. Parasitism and other biological associations (symbiosis, mutualism and commensalism). Parasite-host interaction. Parasite propagation. Taxonomy, nomenclature and systematics. Parasitarian ecology. Classification, morphology and life cycle of parasites within phyla Arthropoda (Insecta and Arachnida), Sarcomastigophora, Apicomplexa, Ciliophora and Pentastomida.
Practical programme: the Parasitology lab. Methods of collecting and storing parasitic forms. Observation and identification of insects, hard ticks, mites, hematic protozoa, Cryptosporidium and coccidia.

Teaching Methodologies

Lectures and practical classes. Seminars.
Continuous assessment.
Written examination for the theoretical component; laboratorial examination for the practical component.
A classifications of 9.5 (over 20) is the passing grade for the theoretical and practical components.
