Objectives

In this curricular unit (CU) students should adquire a broad group of skills giving them knowledge that may be used forward in future CU from the curricular plan of the master. Thus the students should recognize the importance of biochemistry, area of knowledge that is studying the chemical reactions that occur in biological systems and their participants (biomolecules), in the study based on the area of veterinary science. Should relate the information associated with the biomolecules with more advanced areas of pathology, toxicology and pharmacology. In practice students should be able to use the more basic techniques for the analysis of biomolecules: spectrophotometry, electrophoresis, titrimetric analysis, chromatography..

Program

1. Basic concepts of general and organic chemistry for biochemistry students.
2. Aminoacids and proteins – aminoacids structure and properties; structure, dynamics and function of structural and
functional proteins.
3. Enzymology – enzyme catalysis, enzyme parameters and catalytic mechanisms.
4. Vitamins and coenzymes – chemical properties and biological and biochemical functions.
5. Carbohydrates - mono, oligo and policarbohydrates (structure, properties and function).
6. Nucleic acids. nucleotides and nucleic acids (properties and cellular functions).
7. Lipids: structure, functions and lipid interactions.
8. Biologic Membranes and membrane transport.

Teaching Methodologies

The theoretical classes are based on oral exposure supported by multimedia presentations. Will be given to students the opportunity for discussion all topics relevant to the content being taught in the classroom. All the discussion will be moderate by the professor.

Practical classes will be taught in the lab, where students will have to run experimental protocols in structural biochemistry, and these, whenever possible, will be associated with the matters to be taught in lectures. Practical work will have a brief theoretical introduction based on oral presentation by the teacher. In practical component of structural biochemistry, the practical implementation of the protocols, as well as the discussion of the results, is conducted by students but always supported by the teacher.

To the students will also be available in advance all media files presented in class as well as the protocols used in practical classes. Students are evaluated in continuous, additional and exam evaluation
