Objectives

Supply basic knowledge for the understanding of horticulture production systems either in the open or in greenhouse production.

Program

1. Introduction. Concepts. Vegetable and flower crops most important characteristics. Types of vegetable and flower farms. Vegetable and flower production in Portugal and the EU. EU legislation.

2. Climate factors in Horticulture.

3. Climate change techniques in Horticulture. Greenhouses and soil cover.

4. Soil and fertilization in Horticulture. Composting.

5. Soil replacement in Horticulture. Soilless cultivation.

6. Crop management in Horticulture. Plant propagation. Soil management. Rotations and consociations. Irrigation. Organic farming.

7. Harvest and post-harvest in Horticulture.

8. Most important vegetable and flower crops for the Azores

Teaching Methodologies

The curricular unit has 6 ECTS, corresponding to a total of 60 working hours, from which 20 are practical sessions and 30 theoretical – practical.
