The main learning outcomes of the curricular unit are: 1. a correct understanding of the tasks of producing texts and of copy-editing; 2. to be familiar with the different kinds of hardware and software that most facilitate the production and laying out of texts, as well as to be able to distinguish bitmap images and fonts from vector ones, and to install, manage, and make good use of both kinds of fonts; 3. to be able to distinguish and name the macrocomponents of an academic paper, a dissertation, a journal article, and a book-format essay, as well as the microcomponents of the pages of such writings; 4. to be able to produce and format those components by means of desktop publishing resources and in compliance with national and international norms; 5. to know how to distinguish, name, and format in compliance with standard rules quotations, footnotes, endnotes, and bibliographic citations; 6. to reach a satisfactory understanding of the several stages of book publishing.


The abridged topics of the syllabus are as follows. I. Introductory Matter: 1. understanding the tasks of producing texts, copy-editing, and preparing manuscripts for printing; 2. Word-processers, desktop publishing applications, computers, scanners, printers, and other peripherals; 3. Bitmap versus vector graphics and fonts. II. The macroand micro-components of (i) an academic paper, (ii) a dissertation, (iii) a journal article, and (iv) a book-form essay: how to distinguish and refer to them, as well as how to produce, format and enhance them electronically. III. The standards for producing, formatting and citing academic texts: how to follow them in producing and referring to different types of quotations, notes, and bibliographic citations. IV. The stages of publishing materials professionally: how to tell them apart, to discern who is responsible for each of them, to differentiate the tasks and tools each entails, and to comply beforehand with the standards imposed by them.

Teaching Methodologies

The teaching methodologies adopted, which are proof in themselves that they have been chosen in agreement with the learning objectives, are as follows. (A) Concerning the 1st objective, oral exposition and explanation of the subjects dealt with, complemented by the digital projection of graphic materials. (B) Concerning the 2nd objective: (i) those mentioned above, in (A), as well as (ii) real-time demonstration (mainly by means of the visual sharing of PC’s desktop material) of the characteristics and the correct use of desktop publishing tools. (C) Concerning the 3rd objective, those mentioned above, in (A) and (B/ii), as well as the handling of printed material. (D) Concerning the 4th objective, those mentioned above, in (B/ii). (E) Concerning the 5th objective, those mentioned above, in (A) and (B/ii). (F) Concerning the 6th objective, those mentioned above, in (A).
