Objectives

1. Understanding Social Policy in its evolution and current trends, discussing the principles and institutional forms of welfare states;

2. Characterize the particularities of the Portuguese welfare state within the countries of southern Europe;

3. To analyze the future of Social Europe;

4. Identify the main characteristics, problems and reform of the Portuguese Social Security System;

5. Identify Policies to Combat Unemployment, focusing on Active Social Policies - constraints and strategies;

6. Characterize Public Policies against Poverty and Social Exclusion, identifying the characteristics, potentialities and limits of the policy RSI;

7. To analyze the role of Social Work and the participation of social workers in the production process, administrationand implementation of social policies.

1. Social Policy. Concetualização and main ideological perspectives

2. Formation and Crisis of Welfare State

3. Current trends in Social Policy and Welfare States. Changes in the triangle-State Market-Civil Society. Future of the Welfare State: Modernization and Welfare retrenchemen. New Public Management. European Social Model - Lisbon Strategy and 2020.

4. Social Policy in Portugal. Main stages and logical policies. Portugal in the countries of southern Europe. Reconfiguration of the welfare state and the role of non-profit organizations. Relationship and Family Status.

4.1. Sectorial policies:

4.1.1. Social security system: characteristics and problems

4.1.2. Employment policies. Guidelines of public employment policies: active policies - instruments, potentialities and limits. European Employment Strategy.

4.1.3. Combating poverty and social exclusion: transversal policies and specific policies: RSI

5. Social Work and Social Policy.

Teaching Methodologies

Lessons are essentially based on the exposition, exhibition and explanation methods, supported by demonstration with resource of audio-visual techniques and analysis of written documents. This process is accompanied by strategies and techniques of active involvement of students in the teacher's lecturing by: conducting brainstorming ideas (trying to assess which ideas of common sense need to be deconstructed) prior to the presentation of theoretical concepts and promoting space debate, critical participation, applying content relationships and its application in practice. Development of summary moments, at the beginning of each class, briefing main ideas of each theme with input from students.
