The objectives focus on knowledge of the evolution of the process of European integration, in the functioning of the EU institutions and in the political process that has involved the European continent since World War II.
We seek to assert the distinction between cooperation and integration processes, with the aim to put the European integration in the framework of the development of international relations and its influence in other regional organizations.
Particular attention is dedicated to the distribution of power between the various institutions and organisms of the European Union, as well as to their inter-relations and participation in the decision making processes.
The integration process: the origins of the European Union. The European Union from the point of view of international law: the status of international organization, the legal personality and the treaties. The theories of European integration: federalism, neofunctionalism, intergovernmentalism and the new theories of European integration. The European Union: appearance, nature and evolution: from the Schuman Declaration to the Treaty of Lisbon. The institutions of the Union. The decision making process. The European institutions, competences, and equilibrium, cooperation and conflict. Commitology and governance. The Treaty of Lisbon: subsidiarity and proportionality. The national and regional Parliaments and the decision making processes. The Europe of the regions: the regional policy of the Union and organizations of interregional cooperation. The Azores and the European Union.
The teaching activities for the curricular unit unfold along three major lines: theoretical classes, of presentation of concepts, arguments and theories; theoretical and practical classes dedicated to questioning, analyzing, exploring and commenting of selected texts and the respective nuclear contents; tutorials, for the orientation of the work developed by the students, individually and in groups. An interactive methodology, centered on the student is adopted. Throughout the semester we proceed with the construction of explanatory schemes of the concepts, theories and issues addressed.
