Objectives

In this unit students are required to acquire knowledges, practical and theorical, at least equivalent to sports Coastal Skipper.

In this way, students will have to learn and dominate the following main items:

1. History of seamanship and navigation

2. Nautical cartography, routes and emans of achieving these.

3. Navigation by compass and GPS as well as planning routes in nautical charts.

4. Practical domain of navigational manouvers in both engine and sail ships.

5. Knowledge of portuary proceedings, rescue in sea and naval communication codes.

6. Reading tidal tables and synoptic charts (already acquired within the unit Climate and Meteorology) and planning hipothetycal situations of navigation under extreme and adverse conditions.

7. Know the main types of ships and principal aspects of maritime Law, both Portuguese and International.

2. Revision of basic/fundamental concepts

3. Maritime domain

4. Characteristics of ships, conventions and navigational procedures.

5. Orientation and navigation

6. Auxilliary techniques to navigation

7. Practical sessions:

7.1. Command and skipping an engine powered ship

7.2. Correct use of communications

7.3. correct use of navigational equipments and ferification of their accuracy

7.4. Execucion of elementary seamanship duties

Teaching Methodologies

Power point presentations of all theoretical items of the syllabus, demonstrations of navigation equipments in land and study of nautical charts and route training.

Practical nautical manouvers (sailing and engine powered) in ships and boats provided by the academic staff responsible and the two external colaborators in the Marina of Angra do Heroísmo.

Practical navigation on sight of land, by GPS and compass.
