International Relations Theory

Objectives

Inserting itself in the path of the work developed at the undergraduate level, the curricular unit searches to fulfill three major objectives: firstly, to explore the nature and the value of theory and of theory building for the understanding of reality; secondly, to revisit the major theories of International Relations and to offer the students a synoptic perspective of the present international system and of the profound crisis befalling upon the West with a view towards the development among the students of better and more refined understanding of the present and of the possible futures ahead; thirdly, to motivate the students to scientific research and to the identification of a dissertation project.

Understanding the present crisis as being, more than financial, or Portuguese, of a political and Western nature, in theory we search for alternative models capable, on the hand, of making sense of the present and, on the other, of furnishing us clues for future action.
