Objectives

The unit Project aims to convey to the students the basic principles of: (i) development of small research projects; (ii) preparing papers; and (iii) presentation of oral communications. It is intended that the students can identify problems, can develop critical thinking, are able to communicate, can integrate and discuss science and data. Accordingly, three learning outcomes were defined:

- to describe work and research techniques in Geology;

- to develop small research projects;

- to prepare a report, structured as a scientific paper, and to present it to an audience.

Program

- Research techniques and selection of scientific information
- Development of projects
- Familiarization with techniques and working methods in Geology
- Presentation of scientific information

Teaching Methodologies

The lecturing of the items will be based on several resources, e.g.: computer and multimedia projector, black board, overhead projector, textbooks, scientific publications and exploration of specialized internet sites. The students are encouraged to read and discuss specific research articles and receive training on how to carry out an eficiente literature search and subsequent analysis, synthesis and discussion of the information gathered. The practical component, designed to enable the contact of the students with specific laboratory and field techniques in the área of this course, is conducted in the laboratories in the Department of Geology.
