Objectives

1. Show that only after the 16th century are the social and economic conditions met for the artistic manifestations in Azores to arise.

2. To raise awareness that in what concerns artistic manifestations (15th to 18th century) the religious testimonies are predominant in the Azores.

3. Identify the artistic movements in the Azores between the 15th and the 18th century.

4. Characterize these artistic movements in a comparative perspective to the Portuguese and European artistic environment.

5. Relate the artistic phenomenon with the historical reality of the Azores.

6. Justify the relevance of the Art and Heritage studies as a key subject for the skills required of a future Nature Guide.

7. Master specific concepts within the art and architecture scope.

8. Develop logical thinking from observing images and writing.

Program

1. Late Gothic and Manuelin architecture: Structural and artistic features. The Manuelin symbolism.

2. The influences of the Flemish culture in Portuguese Court and in the sculpture and painting in Azores during the 15th to the 18th centuries.

3. The Renaissance: The Renaissance ornamentation and the small architectural presence of Renaissance art in the Azores. The military architecture and spread of the fortified bastions.

4. Mannerism: The Plain Style and its acceptance in the Azores. The long Azorean Mannerism: some examples and its characteristics. The Mannerism sculpture and the Masters of the Cathedral. Characteristic of the Mannerism and Proto-Baroque painting.

5. Baroque, the art of illusion: The importance of S. Miguel architecture for the Island Baroque: characteristics. Baroque woodcarving and tiling.

6. The Discoveries and the Art: Characteristics of Portuguese-Oriental Art: Indo-Portuguese, Sinhala-Portuguese, Japanese-Portuguese and sino-Portuguese art.

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretic-practical classes where it is privileged the analysis and comparative study of the several aesthetical proposals, being promoted the interpretation and analysis of images using a Data Show, and also the debate of the presented contents.

In practical classes there will be field trips to buildings representing the historical moments referred to at the theoretic-practical classes: one in S. Francisco parish and Praia da Vitória city and others in Angra do Heroísmo.
