Interpretation

Objectives

In addition to carrying out interpreting tasks between Italian and Portuguese in consecutive and simultaneous
modes, seeking to attain a good performance (linguistic fluency, lexical accuracy, with appropriate intonation and
rhythm, this curricular unit aim to
- understand the legal, social, linguistic, cultural and organizational contexts of an interpreting situation;
- start to use the main professional tools, as well the most advisable methodologies in order to carry out an
appropriate interpreting performance and an efficient terminological research;
- know and apply interpreting codes of conduct;
- know and apply safety rules (about physical integrity of the interpreter, occupational insurance systems, legal and
financial guarantees).

Consecutive interpreting;
Simultaneous interpreting; ,
Whispered interpreting; ,
Relay interpreting;
Escort interpreting:
Judicial interpreting.
Code of Ethics for Interpreters.
National and international Professional Associations: entrance exams.

Teaching Methodologies

A range of methods is used:
Simulation of different interpreting modes.
Research and utilization of auxiliary tools.
Self-assessment and peer assessment of performances.
Glossaries: compilation and research.
Participation in real conferences and debates (with real interpreters at work, in simultaneous or consecutive
interpreting activities) and viewing of recorded conferences
Students are assessed continuously, taking into account the degree of understanding about the themes identified
above and about the problems involved.
A final report will be submitted at the end of the semester, totalling 30% of the final grade.
