Methods of Demografhic Analysis

Objectives

The fundamental objective of this course is to provide students with the fundamental instruments of Demographic Analysis, both in terms of longitudinal and cross-sectional analysis, framing the construction of appropriate indicators for the analysis of the different variables related to population movements. We will try to describe, analyze and interpret information of statistical origin according to the most usual measures inherent to the demographic phenomena in question, enabling an adequate knowledge of these.

In this sense, ways of approaching and treating birth, fertility, mortality, nuptiality and divorce will be systematized, among others, and the program's orientation seeks to resume the in-depth analysis of each of the microdemographic variables responsible for the dynamics population and emphasize its quantification and measurement in relation to the territorial distribution.

Program

I. Introduction TO DEMOGRAPHIC ANALYSIS METHODS AND TECHNIQUES:

2. transversal analysis and longitudinal analysis.

3. Principles of analysis with the Lexis Diagram

4. Principles of standardization of the population

3. Intensity, Calendar, Rates and Quotients

II. MORTALITY: cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis. Mortality and variation or seasonality tables

III. NATALITY: cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis. Average Age and Fertility Variance, Synthetic Fertility Index

IV. Nuptiality and Divorce: cross-sectional and longitudinal analysis. Wedding Tables

V. INTRODUCTION TO THE POPULATION STRUCTURE MODELS: stable and stationary populations. Mortality, fertility and age structure in stable populations.

Teaching Methodologies

In this Curricular Unit, it is essential to distinguish technical and analytical methods properly framed and supported by the theoretical principles of construction, use and treatment of census and demographic information from civil status statistics. The construction of analysis indicators as well as the interpretation of graphic methods are the target of intensive and exhaustive work with students. In this sense, the theoretical-practical and practical classes appear as consistent to base the knowledge already consolidated in the scope of analysis and interpretation of demographic science. The technical preparation of students for the calculation of different indicators requires an effective training and education time with the existing demographic data.
