Objectives

The curricular unit seeks to provide a basic understanding of diplomatic and consular law, its evolution and historical and political context. It is important for students to acquire a solid knowledge of the functions, instruments, diplomatic privileges and immunities of States and other international agents. The curricular unit of Diplomatic and Consular Law furnishes the framework with which students may learn the typology of contemporary diplomacy, its importance in a global world and acquire an overview of Portuguese diplomacy.

Chapter III - The functions and tools of diplomacy;

Chapter IV - Diplomatic Privileges and Immunities;

Chapter V - Models of contemporary diplomacy;

Chapter VI - Diplomacy in a global world;

Chapter VII - Diplomacy in Portugal;

Chapter VIII - The consular institution: brief history, concept and sources;

Chapter IX - Connection between diplomatic and consular relations;

Chapter X - The staff and consular functions;

Chapter XI - The field of consular activities: beginning and end;

Chapter XII - Facilities, privileges and immunities of consular officers and stations.

Teaching Methodologies

The unity is divided into 30 practical classes. During the classes we promote active participation of students in order to develop reasoning and the ability to integrate knowledge, as well as the application of knowledge acquired, with the resolution of practical cases.

Supporting materials will be also available, such as those used by the professor, including conventions and texts for discussion.

The sharing of relevant experiences will be encouraged in the Moodle platform, with the creation of discussion forums created by the professor.

To assist students, the professor will provide a personalized service of tutorials, and the student can still use e-mail to request guidance and help in solving problems.
