Objectives

In the discipline of Introduction to Demography, it is intended that students know and acquire the ability to analyze the various aspects dealt with in the scope of demographic science, both in terms of methods and techniques, as well as in terms of reflection and mastery over the population problem over time. In this sense, the first part of the program fundamentally addresses theoretical and territorial and social aspects, through a diachronic and synchronic analysis, while the second focuses on testing the data and studying the most elementary variables of demographic dynamics, that will be deepened in the discipline of Demographic Analysis Methods in the 2nd semester. In practical classes, texts will be discussed, exercises and research will be carried out, the elements of which will be previously indicated and made available.

Teaching Methodologies

Given the topics of this Curricular Unit intend to cover a broad introduction to what is expected from demographic science, the classes, of a theoretical-practical nature, have a theoretical component of major importance. It is essential to distinguish concepts and develop consistent theoretical frameworks to support further knowledge in the context of analysis and interpretation of demographic information. We believe that no scientific knowledge or posture can be developed without a basis in concepts and methods that use empirical information. Among the social sciences, demography is the one that predisposes the most to quantification and to the increase of analytical rigor. This is transmitted to students through a theoretical-participatory teaching method that mobilizes research.

It is intended that the bibliography listed below, as well as statistical information, related to the themes contained in the program is complemented by students, with the support of the teacher.
