Objectives

1. Reflect on the scope of a referential culture.

2. Consider examples of the heroic and divine spirit.

3. Recognise the emergence of individualism and cosmological reflection.

4. Assess the doubts and questions raised in Greek drama.

5. Study the Platonic and Aristotelian attitudes to love, justice and happiness.

6. Study cosmopolitanism in the Hellenic period and the period of the Roman Empire and consider examples of the intercultural record.

7. Assess the impetus to the development of eloquence and recognise concerns about public opinion in examples of speeches.

Program

1. Honour and immortality.

2. Political and poetic individualism. The discovery of the cosmos.

3. Greek democracy under consideration.

4. Love, justice and happiness.

5. Cosmopolitanism and interculturalism.

6. The influence of public opinion.

Teaching Methodologies

Classes combine theory and practice. The themes are presented, analysed and discussed, and, whenever possible, related to current issues. Different texts, translated into Portuguese, exemplifying the themes studied, are read and commented, and audiovisual clips are viewed. Whenever possible, the themes are studied in a comparative light, considering not only literary works, but also works of art. Students are accompanied via Moodle.
