Objectives

Students should be able to:

1) Describe the basic concepts of Evidence Based Practice and the steps it involves;

2)Building a focalized and researchable clinical question after an emerging practice problem;

3) Define a strategy to make an efficient literature review, using primary or secondary sources;

4) Critically evaluate nursing research as well as other areas of knowledge;

5) Summarize the relevant results, taking into account the applicability of the obtained results.

Competences

This course contributes with knowledge and skills for the development of general competences expected of graduates in Nursing from the University of the Azores (Cf. https://cutt.ly/ag7ifqt ) with regard to: Instrumental Competences - 1, 6, 9 & 10; Systemic Competences - 21; Competências do Enfermeiro de Cuidados Gerais / Ordem dos Enfermeiros – B1 (20,21,23,24,25); C1 (86).

Program

The development of Nursing as a discipline and profession is directly associated with the development of scientific knowledge within its area of interest. Nursing practice, along with other health professions, must be based on solid and scientific knowledge produced within the scope of its disciplinary area. This scientific foundation is the cornerstone of clinical decision-making. However, the nature of nursing practice does not depend only on the direct transfer of scientific knowledge to clinical practice, but also with the adequate integration with other dimensions such as clinical experience, client preferences or / and organizational culture. It is in this interaction, scientific knowledge and knowledge generated in clinical practice, that the concepts and foundations of evidence-based practice emerge as the guarantor of a sound and relevant nursing intervention, based on credible research results and simultaneously considering individual contexts, beliefs and the person's values, as well as the nurses' experience. It is based on these principles that the course of "Evidence-Based Nursing" is developed in the Nursing the School of Health of the University of the Azores. This course aims to initiate students in the development of professional skills for the decision-making process and clinical practice based on the articulation between the scientific knowledge of the phenomena and the knowledge that comes from the contexts of clinical practice and the clients for whom it is intended.
