Evidence Based Nursing

Objectives

Students should be able to:

1) Describe the basic concepts of Evidence Based Practice and the steps it involves;

2)Building a focalized and researchable clinical question after an emerging practice problem;

3) Define a strategy to make an efficient literature review, using primary or secondary sources;

4) Critically evaluate nursing research as well as other areas of knowledge;

5) Summarize the relevant results, taking into account the applicability of the obtained results.

Competences

This course contributes with knowledge and skills for the development of general competences expected of graduates in Nursing from the University of the Azores (Cf. https://cutt.ly/ag7ifqt ) with regard to: Instrumental Competences - 1, 6, 9 & 10; Systemic Competences - 21; Competências do Enfermeiro de Cuidados Gerais / Ordem dos Enfermeiros – B1 (20,21,23,24,25); C1 (86).

Teaching Methodologies

In this course theoretical and practical approaches will be used allowing students to: (i) identify emerging clinic problems; ii) formulate searchable clinical questions; iii) define research strategies in databases relevant to the nursing profession and discipline; iv) discuss the quality and applicability of the results they are able to synthesize.

Teaching methodologies: discussion of articles related with the contents of the subject; debates; use of Scientific Data Bases; group work; seminars with the active participation of the students; autonomous work directed towards the development of activities to demonstrate students’ skills, regarding the objectives of this subject.
