Organic Chemistry I

« Return

Objectives

Understanding the behavior of organic compounds concerning the relationship of chemical structure with the respective physical-chemistry and reactivity properties. Understanding the importance of the tri-dimensionality of organic structures. Implementation of the rules concerning laboratory safety and good practices in the use of materials and equipment. Learning to apply the basic techniques of synthesis, isolation, purification and purity control in samples of diverse origin.

Program

Study of organic compounds: alkanes, cyclic alkanes, haloalkanes, alkenes, alkynes, alkyl halides and aromatic compounds: Structures, nomenclature, physical-chemical properties, synthesis and reactivity, mechanisms. Conformational analysis. Stereochemistry: chiral compounds, optical activity, separation of enantiomers; stereochemistry in chemical reactions. Execution of laboratory tasks aimed at the basic operations for the separation, purification and control of purity of organic compounds.

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical classes: Powerpoint and “blackboard” presentations. Some classes will be dedicated to the resolution of exercises.

Laboratorial classes: Following discussion classes on the background of methods and a laboratorial demonstration class, the laboratory work is carried out according to a chronogram.
