Objectives

The main learning goals are to understand the contemporary world and the influence of the geographical factor in the decision on internal politics and external projection of international powers. Therefore, it is necessary to develop knowledge, not only in geopolitical theory, but also in practical matters, such as the imperative knowledge of the geographical reality and of the main geographical areas (subsystems). Understanding the concept of war and conflict is also essential to the development of research work in the aspect of geostrategy. The verarching goal is to propitiate that students are able to research and present in class the results of their study, on the geopolitical and geostrategic analysis of a particular state, region or subssistem international, respecting the basic concepts debated throughout the semester.

2. Classic Theory of Geopolitics;
3. Current Geopolitical concepts;
4. Research methods and techniques;
5. Operational concepts and ideas;
6. Geopolitical analysis of the globe: Mediterranean, Middle East, Southeast Asia, Central Africa, Europe and Asia;
7. War and Conflict;
8. International Terrorism;
9. Contemporary World. Geopolitical and geostrategical analysis

Teaching Methodologies

Two components could be identified in this course’s teaching methodologies: theoretical (introduction) and practical. In the introductory component, the main educational methodology to be used is the opened debate of central issues in Geopolitics and Geostrategy, using charts and maps (informatic resources). In the pratical component, the students will work on the analysis of a geopolitical matter of their choice and present it in class.
