Objectives

1. To understand the importance of the preservation of the industrial heritage

2. To identify the structures and manufacturing processes classified as heritage in Portugal (mainland and the islands)

3. To evaluate the importance of the industry for the creation of income, progress, jobs and well being of the societies

4. To acknowledge the most important industries in the Azores since the XVI century until now.

5. To evaluate the binomial industry/energy use

6. To evaluate the availability of raw materials

7. To emphasize the importance of good professional skills and creative thinking for the success of the industry

8. To recognize the importance of organisation, regulation and legislation in the industrial activity

9. To stress the importance of product quality for niche markets

Program

1. Origin of the movement for the preservation of the industrial heritage in Europe and in Portugal

2. Inter and multidisciplinarity in the study and in the presentation of the industrial heritage

3. Industrial plants, manufacturing processes and social structures (associated with industrial plants) classified as Industrial Heritage in Portugal

4. List of Industrial Heritage sites of the Azores Archipelago

5. Old-time industries which flourishing in the Azores: Causes for their start and their decadence

6. Artisanal craft industries still operating in the Azores Islands

7. The actual importance of the agro food industry in the Azores Islands

8. Other industries present on the Azores Islands

9. Renewable energy sources on the different Islands of the Azores and their importance for the development of the industry

10. Computerized industrial machinery and the need for skilled labour

Teaching Methodologies

1. Exposure of theoretical content using the Data Show

2. Study visits to artisanal industries (pottery, embroidery house, cheese making)

3. Study visits to mechanized industries (1927 wheat mill, milk processing and renewable energy sources)

4. Oral presentations and discussions of written works about one industry, done by the students (they have to attend presentations of their peers)
