Objectives

1. Understand the lexicon of natural languages.
2. Analyze the lexical relations and conceptual relations.
5. Mastering the processes of lexical creativity.
3. Make a reflection on the lexical and terminological creation related with the translation .
4. Analyze the relationship between technological innovation and terminology.
6. Recognize the importance of terminology standardization .
7. Questioning the principles followed in the adaptation of neologisms for foreign loan in Portuguese.
8. Identify the role of dictionaries and terminological dictionaries and technical vocabularies in translation.

Program

1. The science of Lexicon: lexicology, lexicography and terminology.
2. The lexical units - historical overview .
3. Lexical renovation: word formation processes.
4. Integration neologisms in the language.
5. Lexical and conceptual relations: synonymy; hyponymy; hyperonymy; meronymy.
6. The role of verbal context and situational context: polysemy.
7. From lexemes to terms.
8. Innovation and technical terminology standardization.
9. Vulgarization of technical terms.
10. Terminology and translation.
11. Dictionaries, glossaries and technical vocabularies in translation.

Teaching Methodologies

In class will be discussed different theoretical positions about the themes of the syllabus, appealing to the critical reading of the fundamental texts of Lexicology and Terminology. It will appeal to the contribution of the trainees in the collection of neologisms and lexical creativity examples, according to the different word formation processes. With regard to the various problems posed in the introduction of technical terms, terms collected by the students will be analyzed. The following activities will have priority: analysis of different word formation processes; collection and analysis of neologisms and technical terms in different areas of expertise; comparison of different terms for the same concept; verification of neologisms entry in dictionaries of Portuguese. The evaluation will be divided into the following components: participation in class, comprising an oral presentation - (20 % ) ; Research work: oral presentation (20%); written version (60%).
