Objectives

The course objective is to equip course participants with some of the vocabulary and skills required to read, write and speak in English about medicine and related areas.

Program

•  learning and practicing medical vocabulary, especially with regard to lay terms and professional terms, collocation and pronunciation;

•  reading articles, with the focus on reading effectively and active reading;

•  writing skills, with the focus on the structure and organization of scientific articles;

•  speaking (short presentations, discussions) and pronunciation;

•  communicating with patients;

•  general vocabulary.

Teaching Methodologies

During the classes, several practical exercises will be carried out individually, in pairs or in groups, so that students can use technical medical vocabulary, understand and explain technical texts, write coherent and well-organised texts, express themselves in a clear and fluent way, and understand spoken English at an advanced level. 

Students will have varied articles related to Medicine for a better development of their understanding of the English language. Practice in the four skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) is complemented with a review and consolidation of grammar and syntax. Students will practice the acquired language to participate properly and effectively in discussions and assignments.

Students who obtain less than 10 ​​in the continuous assessment will be able to take the exam. The exam consists of two mandatory parts: one written (50%) and one oral (50%). Students who obtain 8 or higher ​​in the written test are admitted to the oral test.  Students are required to attend 75% of the number of classes, with the exception of student-workers. Failure to comply with this rule will result in exclusion for absences. 

Homework assignments will be posted on Moodle and are to be turned in on Moodle on the due date. Late submissions will not be accepted.  

Students are expected to have mutual respect for everyone's opinions and beliefs so that constructive, dynamic and enriching debates can be developed in the classroom environment. An attitude of respect is expected in the classroom.
