Objectives

Students should be able to:

1. Describe the phenomenon of ageing and longevity of the adult and the old;

2. Describe promoting strategies for a healthy aging of the adult and the old and family/caregiver, promoting longevity with quality;

3. Identify the implications of existing policies and resources in the community

 

Competences

Program

1. The phenomenon of aging and longevity in adults and elderly: concepts, theories, implications, biological, psychosocial and cultural implications


2. Strategies promoting healthy aging and longevity with quality - from data collection to diagnostic decision-making, to the prescription of nursing interventions and to the evaluation of results (basic nursing tools)
2.1. Rights of the adult and elderly - Prevention of stereotypes attributed to the aging process and elderly
2.2. Work, unemployment, retirement and leisure
2.3. Accidents prevention
2.4. Prevention of ill-treatment
2.5. Urinary and intestinal elimination (bowel problems - constipation)
2.6. Physical exercise
2.7. Prevention of complications of immobility and of injuries due to humidity and pressure ulcers
2.8. Sexuality
2.9. Sleep and rest
2.10. Relationship/communication with the person with visual, hearing and dementia disorders
2.11. Spirituality and religiosity

Teaching Methodologies

This curricular unit will have moments of construction and analysis of knowledge through a dynamic that is intended to instill its development, through expositive sessions of the contents, with discussion, analysis and reflection of texts, practical cases (selected by teachers or students); theoretical/practical and practical sessions about the use of the evaluation of the needs of the adult and elderly person; oriented work in small groups that will be presented in the classroom; the use of the audiovisual means inherent to each situation; participation in events, whose contents contribute to the enrichment and complementarity of the programmatic contents and dramatizations, with the objective of contributing to the development of selected competencies.

The research domain will be oriented to the adult and elderly person/family (their adaptation to the state of health), in articulation with other curricular units.

The students will be guided to the autonomous study through the accomplishment of bibliographical, documentary and database, selection and organization of information and analysis and reflection of practical cases.
