Objectives

The students acquire da maxim fluency possible in both orallanguage skills and in written form as specified by the B2.2 leveis of the Common European Framewok for Languages. The students will also develop projects in the classroom and out of the classroom (in the library or at home) that willlead to meeting the specified objectives in the program for the class. Special attention will be given to the different areas of interest to each student (public relations, journalism, etc.) as well as within other required curricula in other classes resulting in a continuous betterment of pertinent vocabulary and for a specialized linguistic discourse in those same areas of knowledge. Ali reading material willlead to the exposition od the students to the various leveis of grammar and composition.

Program

The students will do grammar exercises (verbal tenses, personal and relative pronouns, adjectives) to then apply the acquired in the various compositions that will be written and corrected in class through group activity. Each Student will write a weekly journal entry focusing different themes related to the Anglo-Saxon world: science, politics and the arts; these journal entries will then be read out loud in class to stimulate general conversation, with special attention given to the usage of pertinent vocabulary for each theme presented and for grammatical and pronunciation correction. Translation from Portuguese to English will also be regularly done exposing the students linguistic problems in different cultural contexts.

Teaching Methodologies

Each student will be given the text to be worked in class having as principal objective increased grammatical knowledge, reading comprehension or interpretation of the same reading material, and better understanding of the respective cultural context Each text will be worked to permit or to enrich the student's vocabulary, writing skills and punctuation. Each text will be read out loud in class I the teacher in order for teacher to correct the student's pronunciation, organization of ideas expressed orally and the introduction of increasing complexity of the vocabulary terms. The students will watch one chosen film during the semester in order to expose them to modern idiomatic expressions in some Anglo-American societies.
