Objectives

This English VI class gives continuity to the previous language level continuing with the objective of bettering the grammatical knowledge and thus giving the students a higher fluency in both oral and written forms. It will intensify de acquisition of the language and its complex expressions leading to the suggested superior level of Cl.l as is recommended by the Common European Framework for Languages. The students will continue to read and work differentiated texts which will also further develop their oral language skills and the written forms, total Reading comprehension of texts containing information on other academic interests and other classes associated with their major area of studies. Students develop their capacity to hold a conversation or communicate in writing with their colleagues who are resident or native English speakers, expressing ideas and concepts in an organized manner and that are common to them in their future professional activities.

Program

Each student will apply his/her knowledge of grammatical structures in both spoken and written language, particularly in essays, written either individually or group sessions within the classroom. The selected texts will be read by each student out loud iIIustrating different writing styles and complexity of both creative or academic language, always analyzing various aspects of Anglo-American popular or erudite culture in the countries represented in those pages. Beyond the continuous exercises or writing practices in the classroom, each student will develop a project for weekly writing broaching chosen themes related to the English-speaking world and then read it out loud for the whole class leading the dialogue around those same themes and utilizing appropriate and pertinent vocabulary. The translation exercises will be applied to those texts read in the classroom by the students with the objective to encourage the use of short expressions or phrases in their cultural context.

Teaching Methodologies

Each student will do autonomous grammatical exercises followed by t he reading of texts for total comprehension and logical objective or subjective interpretation as is determined by the cultural contexts of the same reading material. Reading at this levei aims at vocabulary enrichment associated with pre-defined themes, and when read out loud the departure for essential corrections of pronunciation or for the teaching of oral language skills. ln each text, the contents will improve and complexify both reading comprehension and general interpretation. The students will also be shown one film during the semester for a better understanding of either the history or the modernity of the English-speaking society being represented.
