Objectives

1. To know the genesis and the enlargement of the United Nations System (UNS).
2. To analyze the action of the International Organizations (IGO), the main bodies and other entities which are part of the UNS.
3. To develop autonomous research, reflecting on the acquisition of oral and written discursive competencies.

Program

Topic 1. From 1815 to the contemporary era. The rising of the contemporary international organizations to the United Nations (UN).
Topic 2. The IGO in the scope of the theories of international relations.
Topic 3. The UN: from the Charter to the organizational functioning. Peace, collective security and development.
Topic 4. UN and International Law. Human rights. Humanitarian interventions. Migration and Refugees.
Topic 5. Specialized Agencies and Related Organizations of the UNS.
Topic 6. Funds, Programmes and Other Entities of the UNS.
Topic 7. Specialized departments, Offices and other bodies of the UNS.

Teaching Methodologies

Combination of methodologies. The lectures will be illustrated by means of analysing texts and documents to which students will have access. The perspective of the autonomous work of the master’s candidate has as a requirement of previous readings in order to participate in the seminars and the elaboration of a research paper.

In line with the adopted methodologies, the following learning activities will be prioritised: creating a database on the topics studied; the investigation and subsequent organisation of information; a careful reading of selected texts; a productive discussion and debate while clarifying doubts and deepening questions; applying and demonstrating competencies in the area of oral and written discourse.
