Objectives

This unit aims to teach students the basic principles of: (i) search for scientific information; (ii) preparation and development of research projects; (iii) writing scientific papers, posters, projects and reports; and (iv) presentation of scientific posters and oral communications. Students of this course should be able to identify problems, develop critical thinking, and to communicate, integrate and discuss scientific data and information. Accordingly, four learning outcomes were established:

1. Describe research and methodologies in Biology.

2. Structure small research projects: choice of topic; placement of hypotheses; setting objectives and defining methodologies; expected results; timing of activities.

3. Develop small research projects.

4. Prepare a report with the structure of a scientific paper and present it to an audience

Program

1. Scientific method
2. Resources for scientific information, searching and selection techniques
3. Preparation and project development
4. Techniques and methodologies in Biology
5. Presentation of scientific information.

Teaching Methodologies

The teaching methodology relies on computer and multimedia projector, overhead projector, textbooks, scientific papers and consultation of specialized internet sites. Students will be encouraged to read and discuss scientific literature and will receive training on how to carry out an efficient literature search and perform the subsequent analysis, synthesis and discussion of the gathered information. The practical component of the course is conducted in different laboratories and aims to provide the students the contact with laboratory techniques specific of the area of this course.
