The aim of this course is to acquaint the students to the diversity of algae and fungi existing in nature, its origin and evolution. By studying selected representative organisms of each of these groups, the students will learn the respective variability, characteristics and importance. Two general learning outcomes were defined which should be achieved throughout the semester:
1. Describe the morphological, ecological and reproductive diversity of the major taxonomic groups of algae and fungi, and recognize the respective evolutionary history;
3. Recognize the importance of algae and fungi in ecosystem functioning, as well as the economic potential of these organisms.
For each of the Algae and Fungi groups, the contents include:
1. Occurrence and distribution.
2. Cellular structure and somatic organization.
3. Reproduction and life cycles.
4. Phylogenetic relationships and evolutionary processes.
5. Morphological, ecological and reproductive diversity.
6. Classification.
7. Common genera.
8. Ecological importance and economic applications.
The teaching methodology comprises lectures and practical classes. Lectures are programmed to direct students to the fundamental aspects of the diversity of the organisms under study. Students are encouraged to read and analyse complementary literature on the subject which will enable them to recognize the morphological and reproductive structures of the organisms and how they contribute to their adaptation to the environment. The consolidation, integration and application of knowledge acquired by students will be achieved on the practical classes. The training process should have the active participation of the students and encompass the discussion and consolidation of the acquired knowledge.
