A disciplina incide sobre a natureza da filosofia social e política e o seu valor para as sociedades contemporâneas, procurando fornecer aos alunos um conhecimento sólido dos principais temas e momentos por que passa no Ocidente.
Apresenta dois objetivos essenciais e integrados. Por um lado, visa apetrechar os alunos com um conhecimento fundamentado, quer das formas do político adotadas no Ocidente ao longo da história (desde o ideal grego da polis, até à crise que, desde meados do último século se abate sobre a ideia moderno de Estado soberano), quer das fórmulas desenvolvidas para a organização e a legitimação do poder político (centrando a atenção na democracia, enquanto ideal e enquanto prática concreta, na cidadania e nas grandes ideologias acuais, liberalismo, libertarianismo, comunitarismo e socialismo, em particular). Por outro lado, procura fornecer aos alunos competências que lhes permitam exercer uma cidadania crítica e ativa.
Characterization of the political and of political philosophy. Political philosophy: analysis and utopia. The forms of the political in the West: Polis, Respublica Christiana, State, integration, the European Union and cosmopolitism. Politics, power and legitimacy. The Human condition: the political as an essence. Social contract and rights. The Idea of Human Rights. Forms of the political and forms of government. Major contemporary ideologies: Liberalism. Libertarianism, communitarianism and socialism; left and right. The public and the private and the secularization of the political in the West. Political philosophy and the major challenges of the present: form of the political, community building, trust, tolerance, citizenship, democratic representation. From unitary State citizenship to multiple citizenship. Democray: ideal and concrete practice. Values of democracy.
The teaching activities for the curricular unit unfold along three major lines: theoretical classes, of presentation of concepts, arguments and theories; theoretical and practical classes dedicated to questioning, analyzing, exploring and commenting of selected texts and the respective nuclear contents; tutorials, for the orientation of the work developed by the students, individually and in groups. An interactive methodology, centered on the student is adopted. Throughout the semester we proceed with the construction of explanatory schemes of the concepts, theories and issues addressed.
