Objectives

1. Consolidate knowledge of the historical and geographical framework of Portuguese Atlanticism.

2. Discussing the force lines of historical multisecular dynamics: Portugal Mainland and Portugal overseas.

3. Provide a historical perspective of Sino-American relations in the "long NINETEENTH century" (1776-1918), with particular attention to the role that the islands of the Azores has played in this context.

4. Shaping the evolution of the international systems and changing power relations in the Atlantic in the first half of the 20th century.

5. Characterize the strategic importance of the islands of the Azores as the border between the American and European hemispheres.

Teaching Methodologies

The sessions of the seminar will combine always theoretical and practical aspects, that is, opening interventions for teaching historical and conceptual framework of themes and critical debate, versed among the teacher and students of texts, documents and distributed and/or recommended bibliography on the topics under discussion. The space for the monitoring of students will be dedicated to the definition and orientation of the subjects of final reports that will be submitted in the framework of the seminar.
