Objectives

The main objectives are the following: to familiarize the students with the most important concepts and definitions in what concerns Diplomacy and International Negotiation, as well as the main diplomatic and negotiation techniques. In this context, it is also studied Portuguese Foreign Policy and the Bilateral Defence Agreement between Portugal and the United States of America.

Program

1. The power of the State: the national interest. The political actions: cultural influence; the use of economic measures; the non-violent use of military power.

2. Diplomacy: diplomatic strategy and its tactics. The diplomatic maneuver: diplomatic negotiation. Diplomatic and Negotiation capabilities. The main objective of Diplomacy: diplomatic dialogue and “la raison d’État”.

3. The Bilateral Defence Agreement between Portugal and the United States of America.

Teaching Methodologies

First of all, the professor makes a general introduction of the topic to be discussed that day and asks, afterwards, the students to make comments on that specific topic, after reading the materials that were assigned in the previous class. It is fundamental to have discussions in class between the students and the professor.
