Communication and Personal Development II

Objectives

1. Understand the importance of multiculturalism in the representation and experience of health / illness, namely with reference to the socio-cultural and spiritual dimensions;

2. Reflect and analyze the assumptions inherent to the humanization of health care, taking into account the organization of health care and the sociocultural and individual diversity of users (age, gender, condition, situation…)

3. Deepen the psychosocial risks, inherent to the exercise of the profession, subject to stress factors, knowing how to identify prevention strategies, namely in terms of integration in institutions / organizations and in view of the risk of "burnout.

The curricular unit contributes with knowledge for the development of general skills expected for the graduate in Nursing from the University of the Azores

Syllabus

1. Multiculturalism and the understanding of representations / lived health / disease experience
a. Religiosity and the belief system
b. Cultural and ethnic references and reference standards for understanding health / disease behaviors
c. Multiculturalism in the humanization of nursing practice

2. Humanize as a reflective practice on nursing care
a. Communication that humanizes or dehumanizes
b. Communication in health institutions and the humanization / transformation of care and health services.

3. Taking care of others and taking care of yourself
a. Psychosocial risks inherent in the exercise of the nurse profession.
b. Self-concept and social representation of the nurse.s

Teaching Methods

The Curricular Unit for Communication and Development II is intended to appeal to a theoretical-practical approach that provides students with knowledge, the development of personal and professional skills and communication training in the exercise of the nursing profession.

For this purpose, different methodologies will be used, namely focused on the teacher, but above all promoting the students' capacity in terms of self-analysis and critical reflection through the use of interactive methods, group work, case studies and simulation of professional situations, with or without video recording.
