Objectives

1. Recognize the importance of cultural heritage in the affirmation of local, regional and national identities.

2. Analyze the historical process of affirmation of the Azorean identity and the role that the cultural debate has played in this process.

3. Develop critical and reflective capacity on the most relevant issues in the framework of the cultural history of the contemporary era.

4. Ensure the competencies required for the work of scientific research, with a view to drawing up and public defense of a dissertation.

I – INTRODUCTION

Identity and identities.

Cultural heritage and identity.

Identity and "cultural space"

National identity as mass phenomenon.

II – Regionalism and identity

Regionalism as ideology.

Regionalism in Portugal: Regional congresses and regional houses.

The regionalist literature.

III – The process of identity assertion in the Azores.

The Azorean autonomist discourse of the late 19th century and the weakness of the identity argument.

The deepening of the debate on the Azorean identity in the first third of the 20th century.

The "issue of Azorean literature".

Concerns about the protection of cultural heritage as elements of the affirmation of identity.

In the path of identity: from the "Azorean soul" to the "Azorean consciousness".

Vitorino Nemésio and "açorianidade".

The movement of the "confraternity of the Azores" and the cisando cement regional sense of belonging.

From the "problem of the Azores" to the Azorean Congress.

Teaching Methodologies

Lectures and interactive and practical, focusing on student participation, with guidance from faculty, based on methods of analysis, interpretation and critique of texts and other documents relevant to the issues under study. Promotion of dialogue, highlighting the "recovery" of knowledge gained, not only during the course of the study but, whenever possible, to appeal to the importance of interdisciplinarity and "general culture" in the success of university education. Presentation and discussion of research students. Meeting with students individually or in groups to monitor the practical work. Analysis and discussion sessions conducted by their supervisors on the evolution of research for dissertations.
