Objectives

Learning Outcomes

1 - Develop knowledge about strategies to promote mental health and prevent mental illness at the level of the individual, family/community, based on life cycle transitions;

2 - Develop knowledge about general and global nursing care to be provided to the person with mental disorders and psychosocial integrated in their family/community.

Program

1- Historical evolution of psychiatry and mental health and psychiatric nursing

2- Promotion of mental health: a public health priority in Portugal

3- Nursing interventions with the person and his/her family, with disorders: Mood, anxiety, eating behavior, sexuality and gender identity, psychotic, cognitive, related to substance use, and psychiatric emergencie

4- Therapeutic interventions: (i) therapeutic relationship/communication, rights and informed consent, relaxation techniques, (ii) strategies to minimize the stigma of mental illness, therapeutic occupational activities, adherence to treatment and psychosocial rehabilitation

5- Organization of mental health services

6- Policies for mental health - Programmatic Orientations

Teaching Methodologies

The use of expository and demonstrative methods of problem solving is expected, using case studies, group work, among others, based on a guided study. Dialogue, the presentation of opinions, self-reflection and critical analysis related to the defined intervention focuses will be stimulated, in order to stimulate critical thinking and contribute to the development of the identified skills.

The first teaching sessions, of a conceptual nature, are of an expository and exploratory of the themes. Clinical skills will be promoted, namely through group work and practical classes. Learning activities using testimonies, articles, studies, among others.
