Translation Practice (Italian/Portuguese)

Objectives

1. To inform about the context of the translation agreements.
2. The linguistic, social and cultural contexts in a translation.
3. To delineate self-assessment criteria when faced with a translation proposal.
4. Professional tools.
5. Methodologies: glossaries, stages in a translation, teamwork.

Program

1. Translation agreements: some practical and deontological aspects.
2. Some translation problems (and their respective solutions).
3. "But that makes no sense" – some cases of difficult understanding and extratextual explanations.
4. Different types of documents: administrative, law, business, sacientific, adverstising, informative documents.
Literary and non-literary texts.
5. Systems within the system: specific lexical cases.

Teaching Methodologies

Classes will combine theory with practice. Students will be given a selected body of short texts, with a varied
degree of difficulty and purposes. In addition to this, each student will choose his/her own more lengthy translation
project, to be carried out outside classes. At the end of the semester, students will also present a report on the
challenges and solutions they have encountered and adopted, respectively. Assessment will be continuous, but the
final project will rank highest in the final grade (60%).
