Objectives

1. Students must be capable of recognizing trees, shrubs and garden ornamental species suitable for different situations (interiors, home gardens and parks).

2. Must recognize the plants systems of reproduction and multiplication

3. To be able to do transplants, pruning and grafting

4. Be able to select the best turfgrass for a purpose (home lawns, golf courses and soccer fields, etc.) and its maintenance techniques.

5. Be able to shape a soil by excavating and fill with the purpose to give more structure to a garden or to smooth a surface.

6. To install drainage and irrigation

7. Must identify and control weeds by cultivation or with herbicides

8. Must identify the most common diseases and plagues and their control.

Program

1. Main trees, shrubs and ornamental flowers of the temperate and subtropical zones

2. Shade, partial, filtered and full light plants

3. Speciality gardens (woodland, shade, wildflower, water, Japanese, tropical, the layered, the rock, containers, butterfly, etc.)

4. Plant propagation (by seeds and by vegetative methods)

5. Turfgrass species for each utilization (home lawns, golf courses, soccer fields, etc.) and its maintenance techniques.

6. Construction methods of ornamental gardens and turfgrass gardens

7. Main weeds and diseases of turfgrasses and their control

8. Main diseases and plagues of garden plants and trees.

Teaching Methodologies

Theoretical classes are taught in class for all chapters.

Lab classes in greenhouses, in public gardens and in the golf course to recognize the most important ornamental species adapted to the Azores islands, to see different types of turfgrass utilization and the required equipment for their maintenance.
