Objectives

1. To provide students with knowledge about the mega trends of international tourism, covering four different parts, namely: one related to the trends of the international tourism demand, another related to the trends in the main outbound tourism markets to the Autonomous Region of the Azores; another related to the trends in the air transport sector and finally one related to the technological innovations in international tourism.

2. Provide the students with the expertise, qualifications, values and strategic thinking which are essential for them to hold leading positions in professions related to tourism in the Autonomous Region of the Azores, in Portugal and elsewhere in the world.

Program

Trends of international tourism; Characterization of the main tourism destinations worldwide, based on the main tourism indicators; effects of the world economic crises on tourism and the anti-crisis policies adopted by tourism regions;

Trends in the main outbound tourism markets to the Azores; the role of tourism in the development of tourism destinations: Theoretical and empirical assessment of the contribution of tourism to the development and economic growth in several worldwide tourism destinations and their sustainability;

The trends in the international air transport sector including the development of low cost carriers; The air transport policies in the Autonomous Region of the Azores and their implications for tourism development;

Technologic innovations associated to the new trends of international tourism; The development problems faced by emerging and peripheral island tourism destinations: Diffusion of technology innovations in tourism regions;

 Trends in Tourism Supply.

Teaching Methodologies

Oral expositions about theoretical issues establishing a link with the content of the previous and following classes.

Bibliography

A bibliografia para esta disciplina integra os textos selecionados pelo docente e distribuídos nas aulas e os artigos
