Teaching Methodologies

Different from a standard statistics course, this curricular unit leaves little space to the theoretical discussion of the methods presented. Rather, it aims at providing practical hints on their application and a discussion on their advantages and disadvantages. Many examples will be presented and references to similar studies are illustrated and, in many cases, replace the theoretical exposition of the methods discussed. It is assumed that the student has at least a basic understanding and some familiarity with elementary statistics. The presentation of the different techniques is done with the help of the SPSS- Statistical Package for the Social Sciences. In classrooms that include contact hours in synchronous distance learning (up to 25%, i.e., 15 hours), learning tasks will be carried out within the Moodle platform (or another in use at UAc), stimulating engagement of students through, for example, the analysis of case studies or scientific articles.

The evaluation may be carried out on a frequency regime or on an exam regime. The evaluation on a frequency regime consists of a written evaluation test (80%) and a practical assignment (20%). In the exam regime, the evaluation only includes the accomplishment of a written evaluation test.
