At the end of this unit it is intended that students are able to identify, analyse and describe the biological and molecular processes responsible for cell division and development and their respective control mechanisms.
A. Development of multicellular organisms
1. Cell cycle strategy:
Cell cycle stages
The cell cycle control system
Genetic control of cell proliferation
Mechanics and control of cell division
Biological meaning of mitosis and meiosis
2. Universal mechanisms in animal development
Development standards
DNA Regulation and scheduled deployment
Cell interactions
Genetic control of development
Cell determination
Positional value of the cells in standard development
Asymmetric cell division
Cell Induction and creation of new standards
3. Continuous renewal of tissues - life and cell death:
Epidermis
Sensory epithelia
Respiratory and digestive mucous membranes
Hematopoietic cells
Fibroblasts
B. Application of cell renewal concepts in Health - Regenerative Medicine:
1. Tissue engineering
2. Applications in Regenerative Medicine:
Cardiomyocyte regeneration;
Bone regeneration
Kidney Regeneration
The approach of the concepts will be based on schemes / illustrative images, to guide the student to understand the cellular division and development processes. Students will be encouraged to research further information to help them to grasp the biological and molecular mechanisms involved in cell division and development and how their regulation/control ensures the normal development of multicellular organisms. The consolidation, integration and application of knowledge will be complemented with the exploration and discussion of specific topics (problem based learning). The training process must have the active participation of students, encouraging the discussion in class and the consolidation of knowledge.
