Objectives

The course is focused on teaching several topics, through formal classes and the development of several capacities as critical-thinking, integration and analysis of scientific knowledge and communication. Three didactic objectives were defined:

1. Understand the operation and objectives of the main operations and unit processes (OPU) for the treatment of water for human consumption;

2. Form Unit Operation and Process (UOP) sequences according to the quality objectives of the treated wastewater for, discharge or reuse, and the sludge for land application;

3. Identify the key operating conditions of the main UOPs for the treatment of the liquid and solid phase;

4. Evaluate the operation of the WTP, considering the quality criteria of the treated water and criteria for the effective and efficient use of energy, water and reagents.

Program

Module 0 - Explanation of the course unit operation

Module 1 – Water softening

Module 2 - Coagulation-Flocculation and Filtration

Module 3 - Disinfection and formation of by-products

Module 4 - WTP Management

Module 5 - Laboratory practices (PL1, PL2, PL3 and PL4)

Teaching Methodologies

The curricular unit is taught through the combination of classroom activities, with asynchronous activities in a virtual learning environment, supported by the learning management platform (Moodle).

The theoretical and theoretical-practical component is associated with distance learning and the laboratory component is associated with classroom teaching.

The UC program is divided into 5 modules, lasting 1 to 3 weeks per module.

In each module the contents are presented, application exercises are carried out and the evaluation of the topic studied in the module is completed.

There are also synchronous sessions in the student service hours (doubts) and whenever the student considers it necessary, having an application for scheduling and direct connection to the teacher, through Zoom.

The elements of evaluation used in the distance learning component are: elaboration of written works and problem solving, critical reading and presentation of the article, online test and participation in the Forum.

Regarding the face-to-face teaching component, the evaluation element consists of reports of practical laboratory classes.
