Objectives

The course is focused on teaching several topics, through formal classes and the development of several capacities as critical-thinking, integration and analysis of scientific knowledge and communication. Three didactic objectives were defined:

1. Form Unit Operation and Process (UOP) sequences according to the quality objectives of the treated wastewater for, discharge or reuse, and the sludge for land application;

2. Identify the key operating conditions of the main UOPs for the treatment of the liquid and solid phase;

3. Evaluate the operation of the WWTP, considering the quality criteria of the treated water and criteria for the effective and efficient use of energy, water and reagents.

Program

1. Characterization of raw waste water and legislation applicable to waste water discharges.
2. Principles of operation of the main wastewater treatment UOPs.
2.1 Pre-treatment and primary settling.
2.2 Biological treatment for removal of C / N / P, and secondary settling.
2.3 Sludge treatment: thickening, stabilization and dehydration
3. Operating control parameters.
4. Performance evaluation as an auxiliary instrument for the management of WWTP.
5. Sludge valorization through land application.

6. Sampling techniques and laboratory work.
