. To contribute to the assertion of teachers' professionalism, based on scientific rigour and critical reflection. . To improve understanding of educational reality and problem-solving ability by developing research-related attitudes and competences. . To pursue excellence in mastering subject-specific knowledge, and also in using such knowledge in educational settings. . To encourage the development of educational practice that takes the characteristics of the students into consideration, with the support of knowledge related to their development and to their social contexts. . To relate Teaching of Portuguese and English to Educational Policy and to international trends. . To encourage reflection on the importance of teaching Portuguese and English in multicultural societies, in light of principles of inclusion and citizenship. . To improve understanding of educational organizations, as well as the ability to work with different kinds of teams.

Objectives

. To improve speaking and writing competences both in Portuguese and in English. . To deepen knowledge on grammar, and to use it in a variety of situations. . To develop competences related to research and reflection, and to use them in the context of internships. . To develop planning competences, based on solid knowledge of both content and specific didactics, and also on knowledge about the students' characteristics. . To understand the importance of teaching Portuguese and English in multicultural societies. . To improve competences related to communication and collaborative work, based on solid knowledge on educational organizations, considering their social contexts. . To discuss ethical, deontological, social, and political implications of teaching, and to relate them to citizenship issues.

Admission Requirements

In order to apply to the study cycle, candidates must: . Have graduated in Portuguese and English Studies, or equivalent programme, with at least 80 ECTS in Portuguese and at least 60 ECTS in English, as Decree-Law n.º 79/2014 of May 24 states. . Other candidates who meet the above-mentioned requirements (at least 80 ECTS in Portuguese and at least 60 ECTS in English). It is also required that candidates read, write, and speak Portuguese well, which will be assessed via an oral interview and a written exam (minimal score - 9,5 in each assignment).

Professional Opportunities

The master programme in teaching Portuguese and English in the 3rd Cycle of Elementary Education and in Secondary Education provides professional qualification for teaching in the 3rd Cycle of Elementary Education and in Secondary Education within the scope of recruitment groups 300 (Portuguese) and 330 (English).
